Duncan MacKinnon has been playing the Highland Pipes for over 35 years. Initially taught by Hugh MacCallum - one of the world's foremost piping exponents. Other teachers have included Pipe Major Allan Cameron, Fred Morrison, Dr Angus MacDonald, Pipe Major Angus Macdonald, Greg Wilson, Willy MaCallum, Fin and Duncan Moore and Chris Armstrong.

He has been actively involved in the folk music scene ever since being a member of the Central Region Schools Pipe band up until 1980 and has played a multitude of musical instruments during this time.

Duncan has an ongoing commitment to the Folk Music festivals both in Scotland and Overseas.

Duncan is able to play a variety of instruments aside from the Highland Pipes (his primary instrument of choice). These include the Small Pipes, Uillean Pipes, Border Pipes, Guitar and Whistles.
The other people Duncan plays with are: Jock the box on accordion and singing, he is a great friend and a very accomplished musician in all styles of music, a true genius (try finding him on youtube). Archie MacAllister - also a great friend and dynamic musician. Stevie Gillies - he's a great friend and also a brilliant musician. There are others we can call on...

Throughout Duncan's career he has participated as a member of the 251st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Pipe Band (1986) and was a member of the Stirling pipe band. Duncan is qualified and has taught Highland pipes for two years in the central region belt primary schools from starting up to certificate level.
